Roku OS 9.1 Continues Improvements

Let’s check out the Roku OS 9.1 updates…

Search Updates (US Only)

You can now search for your favorite type of movie such as “comedy” or “drama” when using either text or voice search.

Search results now also show when a movie or show is available in 4K, so you can choose the format you want to stream.

Voice Search Enhancements

When using the voice search, playback will be begin immediately when a movie or show is available ONLY in The Roku Channel, available ONLY in one of your The Roku Channel Premium Channel (HBO) subscriptions, or you specify the channel in your search (Example: “Find Avatar on Hulu”.)

If there is NOT a movie or show available ONLY in The Roku Channel, you will see the usual search results, ordered by price.

To use this feature, be sure to speak the entire name of the movie or show for your voice search.

Voice Command Enhancements

Voice commands now include “Replay” and “Turn Closed Captions On.”

  • “Replay” – go back a few seconds
  • “Turn Closed Captions On”

Here are other Voice Commands examples…

  • “Find” – to find a show or movie. Example: “Find Avatar”
  • “Show me” – to show a name a movie or show. Example: “Show me episodes of Jerry Seinfeld”
  • “Find” – to find a actor or director. Example: “Find Glenn Close”
  • “Show me” – to find movies or shows in your favorite type of movie. Example: “Show me comedies”
  • “Play”, “Open”, “Start”, or “Play” – to launch a channel. Example: “Open Netflix”

Guest Mode

The “Auto Sign Out Mode” has been renamed “Guest Mode.”

When enabled on the Roku, “Guest Mode” allows a user to use their own credentials to sign into subscriptions like Netflix, Hulu, or HBO. And on a date specified have those sign-in credentials automatically removed from the Roku. To enable “Guest Mode” go to Settings>System>Guest Mode on the Roku.

Guests are not able to use your subscriptions when “Guest Mode” is enabled.

“Guest Mode” can now be turned on or off through the Internet by signing into your Roku account.

My Offers (US Only)

Any special offers or discounts on Roku devices will now be show in a “My Offers” section. Click on the “My Offers” on the Home Screen to any offers you may have. If you don’t see the “My Offers” on the Home Screen, no offers are currently available.

Automatic Account Link

This is a great new feature that makes signing into multiple Rokus easy and simple.

If you have already logged into a subscription service (Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV) on one of your Rokus, you don’t have to login again to that same subscription service!

Automatic Volume Leveling for Roku TVs

Do you hate it when the sound suddenly goes up during a commercial? Or even when you switch channels? Then be sure to turn on the “Automatic Volume Leveling.”

The “Automatic Volume Leveling” creates a steady volume level on your Roku TV.

“Automatic Volume Leveling” is already available on some Rokus and Roku TVs that are paired with Roku TV Wireless Speakers.

Look for this setting in the “Volume Mode” section of your Roku menu.
